Investment Milestones
Development Through Diversification
Initially concentrated in the bonds sector, the Caisse subsequently began to integrate new types of investments in order to diversify its portfolio.
Active on Canadian and foreign markets, the Caisse today manages assets consisting of fixed-income securities, publicly-traded stocks, hedge funds, real estate and private equity investments.
Here are a few investment milestones over the years:
1966
First investment: purchase of $500,000 of bonds of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
1967
The Caisse makes its first investment on the Canadian stock market by purchasing 3,000 shares of Alcan and 193,000 shares of the Canadian National Bank (today the National Bank of Canada).
1971
Creation of the private equity portfolio which will lead to investments in a number of Québec companies, such as National Cablevision, Normick-Perron, Vidéotron, Gaz Métropolitain, Canam Manac and Domtar.
1980
Acquisition of its first office building: the Place Delta complex, in Sainte-Foy.
1983
Diversification of the portfolio through investments in stocks listed on foreign exchanges. This allows the Caisse to invest in new sectors where very few Canadian companies if any have operations.
1984
First private equity investment abroad in France’s Compagnie financière Martin Maurel.
1989
Acquisition of Ivanhoe, which held Steinberg’s real estate portfolio, consisting mainly of shopping centres.
1993
First investment abroad by the SITQ subsidiary, in the Albert-Borschette Conference Centre, in Brussels (Belgium).
2005
First major acquisition in infrastructures with an investment in the German company Hochtief Airport Capital, a leader in airport management. The following year, the Caisse invests in BAA, the world’s leading airport operator.
